If you decided to stop using fluoride toothpaste, you probably found that the hard part was not the decision. It was what came next. Nearly every brand on the shelf now prints the word hydroxyapatite somewhere on the box. Very few will tell you which particle size they used, how much of it is in the tube, or what else they added to make the paste foam and taste like something.

That gap is the reason for this site. We buy the products, read the physical labels rather than the marketing pages, and score everything against a published rubric that does not change between brands. Currently 7 products are ranked. The subscores are all visible, so you can see precisely where a product earned its position and disagree with our weightings if you want to.

What we are not

We are not dentists and nothing on this site is dental advice. We are careful about the difference between what the research on hydroxyapatite supports and what brands imply it supports, and we would rather be boring about that than confident and wrong. Anything specific to your mouth is a conversation for someone who can look inside it.

We are also not neutral about the underlying question in the way a general consumer publication would be. This site is written for people who have already decided to go fluoride-free, or who are weighing it seriously. Our guide to that decision sets out the case on both sides as honestly as we can, including the parts that do not favor the products we rank.

How this is funded

Some outbound links on this site may earn a commission. That has no bearing on the rankings, because the rubric is fixed and the subscores are published. No brand pays for placement, no brand sees a score before publication, and we run no sponsored content.
